Offshore / off-grid hydrogen production
Producing green hydrogen directly offshore creates opportunities to convert renewable electricity close to where it is generated, without relying on a connection to the onshore electricity grid. Together with H2sea, Enersea develops offshore and off-grid hydrogen production solutions that integrate offshore wind power, electrical systems and hydrogen production.
A key engineering challenge is maintaining power system stability when an offshore wind farm operates without the inertia normally provided by the electricity grid. H2sea and Enersea develop and analyse solutions for these low-inertia systems using Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) studies. This expertise includes concepts combining conventional Wind Turbine Generators with grid-forming converters and Energy Storage, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The aim is to develop stable, efficient and cost-effective electrical system configurations for large-scale offshore hydrogen production.
